How to Salvage an Airbnb WiFi Disaster

You check into your Airbnb, connect to the WiFi, and run a speed test only to be horrified by the results! This is every remote worker's worst nightmare. While not every situation can be fixed, we've spoken to a handful of remote work experts to compile the top things you can do to get back online.

Message the host

The first thing you should do is kindly message the host and explain the connection problems you are facing. Often there is a backup WiFi network that they can give you access to.

Create a mobile hotspot

If the WiFi can't be fixed, you can likely still secure a strong internet connection by creating a mobile hotspot with your smartphone. You will then be able to connect your laptop to this newly created network.

Check the WiFi band

Most routers offer two frequencies. The 2.4 GHz band provides coverage at a longer range but transmits data at slower speeds. The 5 GHz band provides less coverage but transmits data at faster speeds. Switching from 2.4 to 5 can easily 10x the download and upload speeds you are experiencing.

1 - Check the brand of the router

2 - Enter the router default IP address into your web browser

You can use the lookup table shown here

3 - Login using the default username and password

Surprisingly most people do not change the username and password on their device.

4 - Setup 5ghz WiFi band. Connect your device.

Book a new property

When all hope is lost you can still ask for a refund from the host and then look for a new place to stay. You can use the Roamer chrome extension to find a new Airbnb in an area with fast internet.
